Katherine Vatnsdal spent her summer interning in our Sales Operations Department. Find out more about Katherine and her experiences at Edmentum!
My name is Katherine and I grew up in Independence, MN. I am a Junior at the University of St. Thomas and my major is Financial Management. Other than studying and learning, I enjoy binge watching House of Cards on Netflix, eating Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream, and singing some Tracy Chapman or Glen Campbell at karaoke.
I heard about Edmentum from the Career and Development Center at school. Also, it is familiar to me since my father uses Study Island in his classroom! A typical day as a Sales Operations Consultant (SOC) intern is filled with creating or “cloning” renewal quotes and assisting fellow SOC’s with their workload when needed. The other intern and I worked on a project together analyzing the SOC renewal process. For the project, we analyzed the response rate of emails sent and received, calculated how many emails on average it takes to send before the customer would renew their subscription, and explore the overall process to suggest ideas of how to increase efficiency. The project was very enjoyable since I was able to learn so much from it! I learned how to analyze processes, was also able to practice my communication and presentation skills, and I developed my Microsoft Excel skills by learning how to make pivot tables.
The work environment at Edmentum is very positive! During my internship, everyone was willing to help out and answer my questions when they could, which made learning easier and less intimidating. I think the biggest challenge was understanding each component of what the SOC’s do since there are a lot of different aspects to the job! One of my favorite parts of the internship was being able to job shadow other departments. It was very interesting to see what their typical days were like and how it compared to other departments. The opportunity to job shadow was also beneficial because I was able to develop an understanding of how all of the departments work together to make each other successful.
Even though I have no idea what my future exactly holds, I do know that I will be able to use all of the skills that I have learned during my internship. Overall, my internship experience has been so wonderful! Everyone at Edmentum has been welcoming and helpful, especially the SOC team. They have taught me so much and I am very fortunate to have been able to spend a whole summer with them!
