McKenna Wierman spent her summer interning in our Marketing Department. Find more out about McKenna and her experiences at Edmentum!
I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and am pursuing my B.A.J. in Journalism with a Business Administration minor at the University of Mississippi. I have always loved writing, and have worked for a few newspapers throughout my college career writing for arts, entertainment and lifestyles beats. When I am not working, I love to curl up with a good book, spend time with my friends and family, visit museums and spend time outside in the sun.
I first heard about Edmentum while searching for summer internships in Dallas. I knew I wanted to do something in marketing, and Edmentum seemed like the perfect fit. I knew after the first round of interviews I would be treated professionally, not going on coffee runs or making copies. And I was right! Throughout this entire experience I have felt more like a part of the team than “just an intern.”
I get to work on a list of projects I have laid out for me every week. A lot of the projects I work on involve research and writing or editing blog posts, so I am always busy. At least once a week I will have a one-on-one meeting with my manager, just to check in and see how things are going. I really enjoy these meetings because it gives us a chance to touch base with one another, see how things are progressing and address any questions or issues I have.
Throughout the week, I usually have virtual meetings with other members of the marketing team outside of the Texas office which has been really cool. It’s really given me insight on the different jobs around the Marketing team, and helped me get to know everyone a little better, even if we still haven’t met face to face yet.
Initially, the greatest struggle for me was feeling shy around the office. I was worried everyone would think of me as “the marketing intern.” But on the very first day, everyone was so welcoming and friendly, I felt right at home. It wasn’t too long before I felt totally comfortable, and even made friends with some of the other interns in different departments.
The greatest thing about interning at Edmentum by far has been the professional and dynamic work environment. There are no stupid questions and everyone is always welcome to contribute their ideas. I feel as though I have gained more from this experience than would in a traditional classroom setting. I really got to know ins and outs of marketing that I don’t think I would have ever come in contact with just sitting in a lecture. The writing, copy-editing and research also came in handy when it came to practicing the skills I have learned while studying Journalism.
Edmentum has not only prepared me for working in a professional environment, but also given me real-life marketing experience I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. I didn’t really know what to expect at first, but I know I am walking away with the experience of a life time. Thank you to the entire marketing team, and to everyone else at this amazing company!
