Meet Brian Halvorsen! Implementation Coach at Edmentum.
Tell us about yourself!
I grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Moose Lake High School in Moose Lake, MN. I played drums in a few local bands in the Duluth area before joining the Army. Later, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree with focus on Special Education at the University of North Texas. I have also completed a Master’s degree in School Administration and Supervision at the University of Houston. While working on that degree, I taught special education classes at the secondary level.
How did you hear about Edmentum?
I was the lead administrator for an alternative campus for students with behavioral and emotional challenges in the Houston area. We used the PLATO Pathways products for Math and ELA aligned to the learners Individualized Education PLAN (IEP). Our students liked that they had control over the rate of instruction. I was asked by a PLATO account manager to present our methods to a regional educational conference. I was hired as an education consultant in November of 2002.
What are your responsibilities in your role?
My responsibilities as an implementation coach include planning and delivering onsite and virtual professional services sessions. I also build custom courses to be used at the district and state levels.
What interests you about the field that you are in?
The very nature of education is changing before our eyes. Learners today have instant access to knowledge and instruction. Schools are rethinking some of the basic methods of instruction as many of our traditional methods no longer make sense. I am excited to be involved in this process.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of your job?
I get to spend a day on the front lines with our clients. I see and hear about their challenges and can offer real solutions. I especially enjoy crafting service session around unique challenges such as Special Education and Adult Basic Education. I believe that there is potential for great rewards within big challenges.
What activities are you interested in outside of work?
I love to read. I just finished The Heist by Daniel Silva which is the next in his Gabriel Allon series. I can also recommend The Martian by Andy Weir, which is best described as Apollo 13 meets Cast Away. I am a Christian, a husband and a father. The order of these roles is not arbitrary. Each one feeds the other. Each encompasses the next in turn. I am a better husband and father because of my Savior. My wife and I work together to parent our child. Watching our son grow into a man has been the most fulfilling experience ever.
