[Free Resources] Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with Your Students

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 – October 15 in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Hispanic Americans are the fastest growing populations groups in the United States. Today, the Hispanic population comprises of 52 million people! That’s a lot of people to celebrate!
Don’t let this important time be overshadowed by back-to-school chaos. Check out some of the resources below that provide free ideas and printables to help you celebrate the history, contributions, influence, and accomplishments of Latinx, Latina, Latino and Hispanic people who have enriched the United States.
- National Geographic Resource Library: National Geographic has a section in their resource library specifically for Hispanic Hertiage Month. This is full of articles, videos, and photographs, all available for free. You can also filter by subject and grade level to find the right resources for you and your students.
- Scholastic: Scholastic has a collection of resources to teach your students about Hispanic history, art, and music using lesson plans, book lists, crafts, and biographies. These resources span from grades Pre-K-8.
- TeacherVision: An incredible collection of free resources, TeacherVision has lesson plans, printables, activities, and references that will enrich your classroom. Have your students read the book The House on Mango Street, learn about Mexico’s Day of the Dead, practice Spanish vocabulary, discover the customs and traditions of Hispanic heritage, play Puerto Rico’s circle game, create your own music instruments, learn about the Spanish influence on music, and more. The possibilities and ideas are endless.

- Education World: Education World has 12 activities on their site to help your students begin their exploration of Hispanic heritage. A brief description of each activity, along with appropriate grade levels are provided for reach activity.
