[MetaMetrics® + Edmentum] Measuring Success in South Carolina
[MetaMetrics® + Edmentum] Measuring Success in South Carolina

In the 21st century classroom, using student data should be simple and efficient. After all, what good does gathering student data really do when it ends up costing you extra time and effort to translate it from raw to actionable?
Educators, administrators, and state education agencies alike recognize the need for classroom data to be accurate, actionable, and prompt. That’s why many are turning to digital classroom tools like the Lexile® Framework for Reading and the Quantile® Framework for Mathematics from MetaMetrics® to bring meaningful measures to classroom data so that educators can spend more time personalizing learning and tailoring instruction to their students. In fact, during the 2017–18 school year, 15 states, including South Carolina, used Lexile® and Quantile® measures to support student learning.
A primary goal of South Carolina’s ESSA plan is to increase the percentage of high school graduates who are college and career ready, as well as proficient in English and math. The state measures proficiency for high schoolers in these subjects through the English 1 and Algebra 1 End-of-Course (EOC) assessments but recognizes that college and career preparation, in addition to readiness for those assessments, is not limited to high school students.
Through the South Carolina Department of Education’s partnership with MetaMetrics, students in grades 3–8 receive both Lexile and Quantile measures from the South Carolina College-and-Career-Ready Assessments (SC READY). Students also receive Lexile measures from the English 1 assessments and Quantile measures from the Algebra 1 assessment as part of the End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP). Each of these measures allows for schools in South Carolina to monitor reading and math from elementary school through high school to better ensure that students are “on track” to college and career readiness on time for graduation.
Lexile and Quantile Measures that Drive Personalized Learning in Exact Path
The increase in states’ adoption of Lexile and Quantile measures elevates the need for more tools and resources that can help educators turn data into action. Ensure that you have an education partner that offers high-quality programs for driving your students toward desired outcomes, while still offering features and functionality that will support your day-to-day instruction.
Through our partnership with MetaMetrics, Edmentum is proud to offer a program that provides Lexile and Quantile measures as an output from an adaptive diagnostic assessment. Exact Path, Edmentum’s K–8 individualized learning solution, pairs adaptive assessment with powerful learning paths and makes it easier than ever to support personalized learning in your classroom.
Students in Exact Path begin with an adaptive diagnostic assessment aimed at understanding each student’s precise instructional level, strengths, and weaknesses. In addition to offering vital measures of growth, each administration of the program’s reading or math assessments also reveals a reliable corresponding Lexile or Quantile measure. With Exact Path, South Carolina educators can stay on top of their students’ Lexile and Quantile measures and make sure that their students are on track for college and career readiness.
After completing the adaptive diagnostic assessment and receiving Lexile and/or Quantile measures, each student is set on an individualized learning path aligned to the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards that includes scaffolded reading or math instruction and practice. Lessons include direct instruction, practice, and regular quizzes, while Progress Checks provide real-time data to inform your daily instruction and targeted intervention time.
Exact Path provides educators with big-picture and skill-by-skill data views to support real-time progress monitoring for students, and the user-friendly interface and engaging, age-appropriate activities allow students to navigate their learning paths independently. The program easily tracks student progress and growth over time, allowing educators to gain powerful and timely insight to inform personalized instruction. With the Lexile and Quantile measures that Exact Path reports for each student, educators can feel confident as they monitor student progress toward state- and grade-level-readiness standards in reading and math.
The Lexile and Quantile measures reported by Exact Path also help students and educators select appropriate reading and math materials that match their unique learning abilities. As students focus on materials that provide an appropriate level of challenge informed by assessments, they gain confidence on the path toward college and career readiness.
