Resources for Ohio Educators to Support Effective Credit Recovery Programs

Resources for Ohio Educators to Support Effective Credit Recovery Programs

In response to the  requirements under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Ohio is implementing ambitious new graduation goals for the class of 2021 and beyond that are focused on providing the support and guidance students need to successfully graduate from high school prepared for college and career success. The state is committed to continuing to build on the graduation rate’s exciting upward trajectory. Ohio’s ESSA plan states:

The long-term goals for the four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate for all students is designed to align with established state targets, which specify a graduation rate of at least 93 percent for all students for a district or school to earn a letter grade of “A.”

In addition to the four-year cohort graduation rate, Ohio is committed to offering a five-year cohort graduation rate as needed for students, which sets a goal of at least 95 percent of all students graduating within five years of starting high school in order for a school or district to earn a letter grade of “A."

For Ohio educators to successfully achieve these goals, implementing effective and flexible credit recovery initiatives will become even more critical. These programs can exist in many different settings, including traditional high schools to help students graduate on time with their cohort, at the middle school level to bridge learning gaps as students prepare for high school, or at alternative schools to provide more flexible options for nontraditional learners. Leveraging online programs for these varied initiatives can help Ohio educators view data faster, manage students and courses more efficiently, and save valuable time.

To help you get started, we’ve rounded up the information you need to know about credit recovery in Ohio, as well as some of our most helpful credit recovery resources and details on Edmentum’s online curriculum programs, Courseware and EdOptions Academy.

Ohio State Initiative to Support Credit Flexibility

Integrated Coursework and Awarding Simultaneous Credit Guidance for Schools

Ohio state law allows districts, schools, community schools, and chartered nonpublic schools to integrate content standards from multiple subject areas into a single course for which students can earn simultaneous credit.

Integrated coursework benefits students by creating authentic learning experiences, deepening student understanding of content, and potentially creating space in students’ schedules for additional learning experiences. The blending of knowledge across subject areas mimics real-world situations and makes learning more authentic. Students are engaged in learning because the design of integrated curriculum creates challenging, meaningful tasks that help students connect information.
