[Weekly Inspiration] College March Celebrates First-Generation Applicants

For any high school senior, getting accepted to college is a day for celebration. But for students who are about to become the first in their family to pursue a college degree, getting accepted can feel like a day fit for a parade! Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School in New York, New York, has a high population of students who will be the first in their family to attend college and are celebrating their achievements with a special College March.

At Washington Heights, an amazing 100 percent of 2018 seniors applied to pursue higher education, and over the last five years, a record 98 percent have been accepted to colleges and universities across the country. The staff at the school encourage and motivate students to not only go to college, but to also achieve their dreams outside the classroom. The College March has inspired 25 other schools across the country to also celebrate the first-generation college-bound students that attend their schools.

How can you inspire, encourage, and motivate your students to dream big post-graduation? Whether your students are heading straight into the workforce or entering a university, your support can mean more thank you might think.
