Edmentum’s Vision for EducationCity

In order to really think about where we want to go with EducationCity, I have to reflect on where we have already been.  As I glance back, I am stunned by the sheer volume of growth that EducationCity has undergone in the past four years.  The content has increased exponentially and it continues to multiply at an astounding rate.  Since 2009, EducationCity has seen over 900 new pieces of content added to the resource including our signature interactive learning activities and virtual Topic Tools that can be customized and easily utilized as classroom manipulative.  We didn’t stop there.  We continued to broaden our content offering with ThinkIts, learn screens and tutorials for valuable, animated instruction, practice, and enrichment.  You might say we have had a bit of a content explosion.

Like the old adage says, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” In education, when you find something that works, you want to duplicate it over and over again.  We are not any different here at Edmentum.  Our vision with EducationCity is to take what works and create more of it.  Now, you might be asking, “Why does EducationCity work so well?”  or “What exactly is it about this program that is so enticing for young learners?”  Well, I can answer both of those questions just by sharing a quote by a very wise child advocate, Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Estrada. 

He once said, “If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”

Yep!  It’s that simple.  Go ahead, read it again.  Simple, to the point, and yet many educators just don’t do it.  They teach the same curriculum, the same way, using the same tired methods, year in and year out.  Here at Edmentum we are working to redefine the 21st century classroom.  In order to do that, we must provide resources and solutions that are appropriate for the 21st century educator.  A true 21st century educator knows that they must have engaging educational resources to entice learners to learn. 

EducationCity works because it teaches kids the way that kids already learn.  The 21st century student is tech savvy and intrinsically motivated by simple rewards, such as animation and the highly coveted, gamification.   Students walk into our classroom already in full-blown gamification mode.  EducationCity meets those students where they are at – leveraging their natural desire for competition, achievement, status, and self-expression.  By meeting these needs, it inspires a passion for learning.  Once their interest is piqued, they stay engaged, and ultimately, they learn, many times without even knowing that learning is taking place.

EducationCity provides 21st century learners with fun, engaging, research-based activities in language arts, math, science, and ESL.  It draws learners in with animated practice and instruction correlated to state and Common Core standards.  Students continue to be motivated and tuned in through the interactive activities and live academic challenges.  For educators, this intervention tool supports instruction for whole-class, small-group, or one-on-one lessons. It enhances RTI, remediation, and special education programs with differentiated instruction.  Let’s not forget the built in resources such as lesson planning tools, whiteboard activities, and real-time reporting and progress monitoring.

Here at Edmentum, our vision is to continue to add to this 21st Century arsenal of resources and do it in such a way that we stay true to our learners.  Our vision for EducationCity is to do what Nacho Estrada so eloquently stated, and that is to continue to teach children the way that they learn
