A Day of Volunteering for Edmentum Employees

A Day of Volunteering for Edmentum Employees

Going to a construction site to build houses is not an everyday activity for Edmentum employees, but it was a great experience for the team and myself. The Human Resources, Product Development and Finance departments in the Bloomington, MN office came together and volunteered at Habitat for Humanity at the end of August. It was a full day of putting up drywall and spot checking screws in the drywall that was already up.

We didn't know what to expect going into the day since no one had ever done the construction aspect of Habitat for Humanity. Once we arrived, the Habitat for Humanity employees told us all about how the program works. A lot of us were surprised that they build these homes almost completely through volunteers! Also, we were able to see who would be living in these homes which really put the whole experience into perspective; we were helping better these people’s lives by the work we did.

Before

Throughout the day, we were anxious to get everything done that we could. For the group that was putting up drywall, we had a long day ahead of us. We had to drywall more than half of the garage ceiling and all of the garage walls. Once we got through the tough part, the ceiling, we were able to get through a wall and a half fast. Before we knew it, the other group of Edmentum employees were already completed with spot checking screws and it was time to leave. It was a rewarding day and we are thankful that we were able to help out the families that would get to call the building a home in less than 6 short months.

After

Edmentum encourages volunteering in the community by allowing employees to get paid for volunteer time every year. Employees will volunteer not only by assisting at Habitat for Humanity, but helping at food shelves, packaging food for Feed My Starving Children and so much more! Giving back to the community is very important to Edmentum!
