In recent months, a number of states have enacted changes in policy to bolster their support for the native languages of English language learners in their schools. These states are embracing the benefits of additive bilingualism. In its most robust form, additive bilingualism refers to an active policy of a school to provide core curricular instruction in the student’s native language, as well as teaching the student English.
